West Midlands Interchange — Rail Design & Principal Designer

Project overview

The West Midlands Interchange is the UK's most significant rail-served logistics development — a £1bn Strategic Rail Freight Interchange offering up to 8 million sq ft of prime logistics facilities. JCMCE led the rail design and the Principal Designer role under CDM 2015, taking the scheme from Development Consent Order (DCO) through FEED, Approval in Principle (AIP), detailed design and out to construction (ES3–ES7 phases).

This included leading the Approval in Principle design of four bridges within the interchange and the demolition of an existing bridge, negotiating with external stakeholders throughout.

We coordinated surveys and rail possessions and managed contracts and stakeholder relationships across a complex programme — ensuring seamless collaboration between the client, statutory authorities (councils, Network Rail and Highways) and the rail-freight terminal operator, and that DCO requirements were adequately discharged.
